Piedmont, at harvest
One region, nine days, and the weeks of the year when Piedmont is actually working — truffles, vendemmia, and the cheese rooms of the Langhe.
A truffle hunt at first light with a trifolau and his dog, the cellar of a producer who sells only to Italy, and lunch cooked by the family who farms it.
One base for the whole stay, a driver on call, and a hotel that will hold dinner for you when the afternoon runs long.
Pace A single base, nothing before nine, and a car never more than forty minutes from the door.
Most Italy itineraries cover four cities in ten days. This one covers roughly forty kilometres, and is the trip clients most often repeat.
The shape of it
- Days 1–2, arrival and the Langhe. A relais outside Alba. An afternoon to sleep, then dinner at a table we will have held for months.
- Days 3–4, the producers. Two cellars, one of which does not receive visitors. A cheese room at six in the morning, if you want it, and a long lunch if you do not.
- Days 5–6, truffle and market. A hunt at first light with a licensed hunter, and an afternoon with a chef cooking what you found.
- Days 7–8, Barolo and the hill towns. Slowly, by car, with a driver who knows which roads are worth the view.
- Day 9, Turin. A morning in the city, the Egyptian museum privately, and the flight home.
What changes it
Come in October and it is truffles. Come in September and it is the grape harvest. Come in May and it is neither, and quieter, and the food is arguably better.
