Naxos, Paros, and the sites before opening

Two islands most travellers skip, a private boat between them, and archaeological sites walked with the people who study them.

Depth

Delos with an archaeologist an hour before the first boat arrives, and a family on Naxos who will cook what the day's catch allows.

Ease

A private boat instead of the ferry queue, a villa with staff, and someone meeting every arrival.

Pace Sites in the morning only, swims in the afternoon, and no more than two moves in eleven days.

This is the Greece trip for travellers who have already done Athens and the obvious islands, and have no intention of queueing for a caldera photograph.

The shape of it

  • Days 1–2, Athens. A roof-top hotel in Plaka. The Acropolis early, the Acropolis Museum privately, and one very good dinner.
  • Days 3–6, Naxos. A villa with a cook. Mountain villages, a marble quarry still worked by hand, and the beach that empties at five.
  • Day 7, Delos. By private boat, before the tourist ferry, with an archaeologist.
  • Days 8–10, Paros and Antiparos. Sailing, swimming, and two dinners with island families.
  • Day 11, Athens. A late flight, and a room to rest in beforehand.
